Lawrence House Newsletter - February 2019
“Lawrence House is like life with stabilisers”

Lawrence House is run by local charity Hinckley Homeless Group. It is a supported hostel for young homeless people. At Lawrence House we can accommodate 12 young people aged 16-25 for up to 2 years each. It is a safe, friendly place where, with the help of project workers, young people can start to turn their lives around and learn to become independent.

Although Christmas is a distant memory for us all now, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters and donators who step-up every year to ensure our residents are remembered and have a festive season filled with joy and hope for the year ahead.

All residents and staff enjoyed a full house Christmas meal on 21st December. The residents were treated to a 3 course lunch cooked and served by the staff. Steve, our weekend evening worker, spent the whole day creating a magnificent traditional roast turkey, with all the trimmings plus more and Lisa, our administrator, supplied the chocolate orange dessert. Everyone rolled out the door and the leftovers were enjoyed for days.

Carol Service - 30-11-2018
Civic Carol Service

We were invited by the Mayor to attend the Civic Carol Service on 25th November, Diana Morgan, Chair of HHG gave a small address and a big thankyou to the Hinckley community.

“There will be homeless people sleeping on the streets this Christmas, huddled in shop doorways, trying to keep out the bitter chill of winter. Some of these homeless people will be very young.......perhaps only 20 or 18 years old. Why are they here, cold and lonely? Their family may have broken down, they may have been rejected and kicked out, they may come from a family who face many challenges and cannot cope any longer. They may have been abused. A significant person in their life may have died. They may be struggling with mental health issues and addictions. And just as they should be embark-ing on the excitement and challenge of adult life, they find themselves alone with no-one caring for them.

Hinckley Homeless Group is a small local charity motivated by a deep concern for young homeless people. We run a supported hostel in Hinckley called Lawrence House. A safe, warm and friendly home for 12 young people, where they find the understanding and support they need. At Lawrence House, caring and dedicated project workers give prac-tical and emotional support, to enable each young person to move forward positively. We aim to build their confidence and enable them to develop the skills they need to live in-dependently. We teach them how to look after themselves, how to cook healthy food, how to budget, how to handle relationships. We help them get back into education, to find training and start working. And when they are ready we help them move on successfully.

As one resident said, “I’ve turned my life around and come out a better person and I thank all the staff that have supported me and believed in me”. Lawrence House is only able continue this life-changing work with young homeless peo-ple because of the kind and generous support given to us by the people of Hinckley, and the surrounding area. You make it happen. When funds were cut and we thought we might have to shut, it was local people who rallied round us and kept us open, and your wonderful support has continued unabated. Every time a young person succeeds in turning their life around it is their success, and it’s our success, and also your success. So I would like to say a very big thank you to Mayor Jan for making us one of her charities this year, and to all of you for supporting us and believing in us.”

Hinckley Homeless Group have been very fortunate in receiving support from Lloyds Bank Foundation to help us become sustainable into the future.

Sleep Out - 18-04-2016

A really big Thank You to Local Rock and everyone who took part in the Big Sleep Out on Friday night.

Trustees and staff from Lawrence House were really pleased to meet supporters and talk about the issue of homelessness and it was a great social evening.

But when we got into our sleeping bags on the concrete floor of the Rugby Club stand, only just protected from the pouring rain and cold wind, we found it really difficult to sleep. By the morning when we were cold and sleep-deprived I think we all appreciated just how very challenging it must be to be homeless, and it certainly underlines how important it is to keep Lawrence House open. Thank You also to everyone who has sponsored those sleeping out. The event has been a great success.

Well done everyone!

Diana Morgan, Vice-Chair, Hinckley Homeless Group
